One thing I like most about Raya is the nostalgic old Raya songs. And one of my favourites is ‘Dendang Perantau’ by P. Ramlee himself.

‘Dendang Perantau’ is a case study in how magic comes out of imperfection. Cos if you listen carefully to the song, you will notice the bass player making more than one mistake. It usually happens in the Bridge sections where the bassist seems to be guessing the first chord.

But, those bass mistakes are integral to the magic of the song. Its imperfectness is accepted, in fact, embraced by fans of the song.

And I think that’s an important lesson in life.

Don’t chase for perfection in everything. Don’t get stressed if it doesn’t come out the way you wanted it to. Just step back and appreciate life as it is. The little flaws that life has, the imperfections and unfairness that life sometimes deals you, well, those are things that make life magical.

You know what I mean.
